You’ve probably heard a lot about LASIK surgery and have wondered if it might be right for you. In the last 25 years alone, more than 10 million men and women around the world have taken advantage of this remarkable outpatient surgery to gain enhanced vision. LASIK surgery is quick, virtually painless and can be remarkably affordable, especially in cases in which health insurance plans pay for all or part of the costs of LASIK vision correction.

The term LASIK is actually an acronym for a much longer title: Laser-Assisted In Situ Keratomileusis. LASIK surgery involves creating a flap in the cornea of the eye to reshape it in an effort to correct vision problems. There are several ways to accomplish LASIK vision correction, including with a microkeratome (a blade device) or a laser keratome (laser device). During the LASIK surgery, a flap is cut into the cornea, with a hinge left at one corner. The flap is folded back to expose the stroma (middle part of the cornea) and laser pulses are then used to reshape the tissue as needed to correct vision conditions. At the conclusion of LASIK surgery, the flap is replaced and your eye heals in a matter of a few days.

LASIK is a remarkable procedure and is time tested and FDA-approved. Although many people qualify for this procedure, some people with pre-existing eye conditions, autoimmune diseases or chronic infections may not. At The Fifth Avenue Eye Center, we are committed to educating our patients about their options for LASIK surgery. We perform many different variations of LASIK surgery in New York as well as non-laser options, and will tailor your procedure to meet your individual needs.
